Marrying in the UAE: what to know in advance
How marriage and family life work in the Emirates: documents, different faiths, daily life and realistic expectations.
The UAE is a country where dozens of nationalities and faiths live side by side, and a marriage is registered differently depending on your religion and citizenship. There is Islamic marriage, church marriage, and civil marriage — since 2022 Abu Dhabi offers civil registration for non-Muslim non-residents.
Documents usually include a passport, a visa or entry stamp and a certificate of marital status; some procedures also require a medical test and legalised translations. Requirements change, so the list is always confirmed at the time of application.
The marriage contract deserves a separate conversation. In the Emirates it is treated calmly and practically: it records the mahr, financial obligations, housing and what happens in case of divorce. It is not distrust — it is normal practice.
Daily life in the UAE is comfortable but takes adjusting to: heat for much of the year, expensive housing in Dubai, life on contracts, and a visa usually tied to a spouse's job. Agree in advance on who works, where you live and how often you travel home.
